The Brain Behind The Magic
Firefly Lighting's award winning founder, Heath Williamson’s career began in film and TV, walking straight out of high-school onto a film set at 17 years old. Since then, he’s worked with major brands from the famous Coca-Cola summer television commercials, to the Tina Turner rugby league campaign, Production Managing the Sydney Olympics Fosters Beer commercial filmed all over the world.
Heath’s been pulling apart Christmas lights since the age of 4 and learnt at a very young age the magic and ambience light can bring to a space. This passion for light made Heath wonder why on earth we don’t use the magic we use in film and TV in every day life. So, Heath started moonlighting on friends businesses and homes bringing the lighting magic with him. With that, Firefly Lighting was born.

Mowbray Park
International Lighting Engineer’s Top Lighting Award Winning Public Space
Mowbray Park in Brisbane is one of founder Heath Williamson's most beloved examples of what lighting can do to transform a community. When Brisbane was announced as host of the 2032 Olympics, the mayor's office approached Heath with a simple brief: activate the park after dark. At the time, it was a place locals jogged past and avoided after sunset. The council expected street light upgrades and a few floodlights. Heath came back with something else entirely. Thousands of firefly strobe lights. Miles of warm white fairy lights woven through the branches of century-old Moreton Bay figs lining the Brisbane River.
A living chandelier of golden, moving light suspended above the city's most iconic waterway. What was once Brisbane's most avoided park after dark is now one of its most sought-after evening destinations. Families dine at riverside tables beneath millions of gently shifting LEDs, with the Story Bridge glittering in the reflection below. Crime rates dropped. Antisocial behaviour decreased. Residents reclaimed the space.

How long do commercial festoon lights last outdoors?+
Quality commercial festoon lights should last well beyond their warranty period. Firefly's LED festoons are built for permanent outdoor installation in Australian conditions, with most customers only replacing products after around 7 years. Look for commercial grade waterproofing, UV stabilised cabling, and replaceable bulbs, these are the difference between festoons that last a season and festoons that last a decade.
How much power do LED festoon and fairy lights use?+
Very little. LED festoons and fairy lights use a fraction of the power of traditional incandescent lighting, often 80 to 90 percent less, while producing the same warm glow. That means large installations, hundreds of metres of lighting across a venue or park, can run every night without a significant power bill or environmental footprint.
What's the difference between commercial and residential festoon lighting?+
Commercial festoon lighting is built for permanent installation: heavier duty cabling, higher waterproof ratings, and components rated for years of continuous outdoor use. Residential or retail festoons are typically designed for occasional use and shorter lifespans. For venues, public spaces, and hospitality projects, commercial grade is the right choice, it costs more upfront but avoids constant replacement.
Can festoon lights be installed permanently?+
Yes, when they're commercial grade. Permanent festoon installations are common across restaurants, breweries, parks, and public spaces. The key requirements are proper cabling and suspension (usually catenary wire), weatherproof connections, and installation by a licensed electrician. Firefly supplies electricians and installers across Australia and internationally with products designed specifically for permanent installs.
