IP (Ingress Protection) Ratings are an international numeric classification to indicate the degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against environmental conditions. It provides a means of specifying the capacity of an enclosure to protect its contents from external solids and liquids in accordance with IEC 60598-1:2003.
IP ratings are broken up into two numbers. The first number relates to solids items (i.e. dust, particles etc.), the second number relates to liquids (i.e. water etc.)
Use the table below to find out what the IP rating of our products mean.
First Digit | Second Digit
1 | Protected against solid objects over 50mm ⌀, e.g. accidental touch by hands. | 1 | Protected against vertically falling drops of water, e.g. condensation. |
2 | Protected against solid objects over 12mm ⌀, e.g. fingers. | 2 | Protected against direct sprays of water up to 15° from vertical. |
3 | Protected against solid objects over 2.5mm ⌀, e.g. tools & wires. | 3 | Protected against direct sprays of water up to 60° from vertical. |
4 | Protected against solid objects over 1mm ⌀, e.g. wires & nails. | 4 | Protected against water splashes from all directions. (>10 minutes with an oscillating spray.) |
5 | Protected against dust limited ingress, no harmful deposits. | 5 | Protection against low-pressure jets (6.3 mm) of directed water from any angle. |
6 | Totally protected against dust. | 6 | Protection against direct high pressure jets. |
7 | Protection against full immersion for up to 30 minutes at depths between 15cm and 1m.
8 | Protection against extended immersion under high pressure. |
